UK Water Industry Research and the Environment Agency has commissioned a significant research project into "Customer behaviour and water use", appointing Tynemarch as the lead contractor assisted by Blue Marble Research Ltd. Current methods for forecasting household consumption rely on a deterministic approach and do not accommodate customer behaviour changes. The research will explore the opportunities for incorporating behavioural elements in microcomponent methods and the potential use of stochastic approaches. The project will inform a forthcoming update to the EA Water Resources Management Plan guidance and identify areas where further research is needed to reduce estimate uncertainty.
The Spring 2011 edition of Imperial Engineer magazine features an article on Tynemarch. The article describes the origins of the Company and some of its key achievements throughout the almost 30 years of the company's existence, including the development of The Common Framework for Capital Maintenance Planning (see also this paper) and, recently, the PIONEER integrated software environment that supports a wide variety of asset management planning modelling approaches.
The first PIONEER User Group meeting took place on 26th May 2011 at the Ambassadors Bloomsbury Hotel in London, providing an opportunity for open discussion of asset management current practice and aspirations. The topics under discussion included the current status and use of PIONEER in companies and plans for the future, views on potential PIONEER enhancements, and mechanisms for selecting and funding PIONEER enhancements. The User Group was considered by all involved to be a positive and productive event and tentative plans were made for a second User Group near the end of 2011.
PIONEER has been delivered and installed at South East Water with the aid of Tynemarch specialists.
Tynemarch has been chosen by UK Water Industry Research (UKWIR) to develop a new calculation method for setting wastewater treatment works Flow to Full Treatment (FFT) consent conditions. The Tynemarch tender was chosen because of our objective and comprehensive approach to data analysis and method selection, and the success of our previous project concerning the Dry Weather Flow consent condition. Further details are provided in the project résumé (available on request).
Wessex Water has been operating a major tariff trial logging over 5,500 domestic customers to determine the influence of tariffs on their consumption, the largest scale detailed domestic customer monitoring study in the UK. Tynemarch has been appointed to analyse the data from the trial. Read more.
Tynemarch modelling of water mains burst rates for Sutton & East Surrey Water was referred to as an example of good practice in an Ofwat paper entitled 'Climate change - good practice from the 2009 price review'. The paper comments that the modelling work "had a strong evidence base" and "enabled the company to make more informed decisions on its future infrastructure maintenance to better cope with climate change". See page 15 of the paper.
