Jeremy then gave a brief presentation on how MISER had been used as part of the estimation of the PR04 capital maintenance expenditure requirements for United Utilities. Firstly he put the work in context with the Common Framework for Capital Maintenance Planning, (developed by Tynemarch and adopted by Ofwat and the companies for PR04 and future AMPs). The Common Framework recognises the need to consider the integrated nature of systems.
MISER was used to estimate both the impact on customers of asset failures, as well as the cost to the company related to providing alternative supplies and recovering the system to the initial normal operating state. MISER models were used covering the whole of the UU area including the following number of key assets:
